Uganda Ecosystem Landscape



Initiatives



  • Foreign investors with a minimum investment capital of US$ 50 million can benefit from 10 years of tax exemption in leasing or renting an industrial park/free zone.

  • Since 2015, the Uganda investment authority has been organizing Kampala Private Equity & Venture Capital Conference to introduce alternative financing options.

  • In a Free Zone, there is a 10-year tax holiday for (a) foreign operators whose investment capital is at least US$ 10 million and (b) East African Community (EAC) operators whose investment capital is at least US$ 2 million.

  • Uganda Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Initiative’s two-phase program is expected to improve startup survival rates.



Investor Landscape



  • National ICT Initiatives Support Program contributes to Uganda’s local and global development of software applications. In 2021, the initiative introduced a grant worth approximately US$ 2 million to be shared among 45 innovative startups.

  • The Kampala Angel Investment Network (KAIN) aims to connect local and global investors to Ugandan entrepreneurs to tackle the funding challenges of local startups.

  • 97Fund, MTN Uganda, Leapfrog Ventures, and Pearl Capital are among the active companies which made an equity investment in Ugandan Startups.

  • Grants are the most prominent form of investment in Uganda. Startups in Uganda benefited from the grants of institutions such as Google, MTN, Hi Innovator, and Villgro.


    Notable Events and Communities



  • Startup Uganda helps entrepreneurs to reach the knowledge, investors, support programs, and mentors to elevate their business.

  • Federation of Young Entrepreneurs, Uganda organizes an annual Youth Entrepreneurship forum with support activities like business clinics, accelerator Bootcamp, peer mentoring, young entrepreneurs academy, and entrepreneurship training to empower young business people.

  • The Innovation Village is an ecosystem builder that connects entrepreneurs, academia, government, investors, and the private sector to build an innovation culture for bringing economic prosperity to the country.

  • The Golazo Project envisions empowering youth and entrepreneurs in Uganda through technology and training/mentoring tools.
